What is the work of the police?

Ans.

Police Officers strive to keep the streets of their community safe, reducing the fear of crime and improving the overall quality of life of the citizens.

2.

List two things that the work of a Patwari includes.

Ans.

The Patwari is an administrative government position found in rural parts of the Indian Sub Continent. The work of a Patwari includes measuring land, keeping land records and organising the collection of land revenue from the farmers. He also provides information to the government about crops grown in a particular area.

3.

What is the work of a tehsildar?

Ans.

In India, Pakistan and  Bangladesh, a Tehsildar is a tax Officer accompanied by Revenue inspectors. They are in charge of obtaining taxes from a tehsil with regard to Land Revenue. A Tahsildar is also known as Executive Magistrate of the Tehsil concerned.

4.

What issue is the poem trying to raise? Do you think this is an important issue? Why?

Ans.

The poem is trying to raise the gender-based discrimination when it comes to inheritance of property. Yes, this issue is important as the women of a house have the same rights to the property as the men of that house. Denying women the right of inheriting family land is an act of discrimination. The Indian Constitution talks about “justice” and “equality” for each individual—so, discriminating on the basis of gender would be unconstitutional.

5.

In what ways are the work of the Panchayat, that you read about in the previous chapter, and the work of the Patwari related to each other?

Ans.

Patwari maintains a land record, while Panchayat looks after local needs. A panchayat also needs a land record, when construction of road or drainage or installation of hand-pump needs to be carried out. Moreover, many land disputes can be easily settled at the Panchayat itself. Thus, both Patwari and Panchayat need to cooperate with each other in their work.
